The best testament that I can provide is that I just keep returning. Since early 2011 I’ve built four custom frames with Downland Cycles under the expert guidance of Bryan and every time I return it feels like a homecoming! Which brings me to another point. If there’s a downside to building a custom bicycle frame it’s that once you’ve built one it’s hard to justify buying a complete bicycle off the peg. Like me, you’ll be bitten by the framebuilding bug. You’ll hunger to learn more, to develop your skills and your knowledge, and you’ll hunger to build more frames. Bryan is an excellent teacher and Julie cooks the most delicious food.

    I’m planning my next already!’

    Hello All,

Firstly i just wanted to say thank you again for a great week, I learnt so much and have a great new bike to show for it – the perfect holiday! I hope you enjoyed the bespoke bike show and it was a successful weekend for you all. Looking forward to being there with you next year. I’ve already started thinking about building my next bike.
Her first 30 mile outing was smooth and I managed to get 40 mile an hour out of her, so happy with that as a starting point.
I’ve attached a few photos of the new love of my life as she is so far, but I’ll send you more when she’s fully finished.

    Cheers
    David

PS I can’t say Thank You enough for what you’ve done for me.

Deidre built her frame and then returned to build wheels and complete bike and rode away!!
    Dear Julie,
Thank you very much for looking after me last week and allowing me to use the camper-van. I am thrilled with my bike and if I had not been there, I would not believe that I made it myself! Bryan has such a good teaching technique. He surreptitiously keeps a watchful eye, knowing when to let you make a mistake so that you learn and when to step in to avoid a disaster or worse – tears. I met Patrick on Friday night at our friend’s in Rochester and they were amazed that I had made the bike. I can not pretend to have been modest and was glad to show off to them. But it is all down to yourself and Bryan and I can not thank you enough.
    Kind regards,

    Deirdre

    Hi Bryan, Hi Julie,
I am absolutely amazed at how easily my bike built up and how it rides.
    Here’s what I think:
    • Love the design and the balanced feel to the ride.
    • I built my wheels and they are awesome – the power in climbing is full on.
    • All the detail matters and stacks up. I really appreciate how getting this right is so important and value your deep appreciation of this.
    • It’s an brilliant fit and I feel so in tune with it.
    • Life changing!
Argos did a great paint job and the pastel blue looks lilac in bright sunlight.
    Love it!
Thanks – I’ll be back just as soon as I can engineer about 5 days in a row off….will book early to avoid disappointment.
    Liz X.

    Bryan, Julie,
I would just like to say thanks for being genuine people and that I really enjoyed the 5 weeks I was at Downland. Food superb, bunk room great, beds comfortable and scenery superb. Bryan’s routes for the evenings were brilliant, the mtb trails on your doorstep are great and the road riding hilly!
I will be in touch with another cycle idea, all the best for now.
    Kind regards,
    Bob

    Dear Julie,
I have been meaning to write to express my gratitude for the care I received from you both. I was very comfortable in the accommodation. You fed us royally and upon my return I have found myself to be heavier than I was on arrival. In fact I was going to say that I only need one sandwich and a piece of fruit for lunch; O and the cake is essential (and a huge T pot).

The area came as a real surprise, it is so beautiful and the most wonderful of riding area. I was really grateful for Brian’s routes and pub recommendations. Indeed I appreciated his quiet oversight of my feeble efforts to learn this craft without making too many errors. I hope that he will be there when I come to fit the tubes together. Thank you too for making us so welcome and comfortable.
    With best wishes, Charlie.

Julie, just wanted to say a massive thank you to you all for such a great 2 weeks I just spent with you. It was way more than I thought it was going to be. Really educationally and hard work in equal measure. I have a new found respect for craftsmen in steel. Pass on my thanks to Bryan for all his patience and hard work. And thank you for all the delicious cake!
    Best
    Simon

The 29er MTB I made at Downland last year has turned out brilliantly and is getting plenty of use. I’m so pleased with how well it rides and fits me. All thanks to being given the time, flexibility and support to design it as I went along. The course was one of the best things I’ve done for many years. Inspirational in fact and I can’t wait to get to Australia and start kitting out a workshop and get building more bikes. I wish you all the best for the future. Kind regards Paul

Thanks Julie for all the lovely food and looking after me for 2 weeks. I had a fantastic time, Bryan is very patient, he listens and shares his knowledge and expertise in a way that is generous and understandable for the novice. I had all ready done your advanced mechanic course and was impressed with this. I now work in a bike shop and really looked forward to returning to build my frame. I have been even more impressed and the bike rides like a dream. I’ll be back to build another next year.
    Regards Kevin

Brilliant course, fantastic food and I’m coming back next year. This was better than I ever imagined, Bryan’s patience is legendary and his calmness, he is Mr Cool – totally unflappable and makes sure you get the design and exact build that you ask to do and more. I found the course challenging, tiring and hugely rewarding, can’t wait to ride it and be able to say to evryone I made this, me – brilliant. See you next year- race BMX next! Cheers Liam

    Hi Julie and Bryan,
Thank you again for your invitation to build the 953 frames, your hospitality and great patience.
Both Tanya and I found the course was challenging but we learnt a lot (and for me , that will be a great help).
And to come away with 2 rideable frames that we will treasure, and be a reminder of the course. Plus having a chance to chat, and memories like riding in the dark to the dinner on Saturday.
We will see you in January to build our frames into bikes with you.
I’ll confirm on the other items we discussed but confirm the 953 frame for Barbara, and the 921 forks (where we will send polished 30mm 921 rake blades, and a butted stainless 921 1.6/1.1 steerer).
Our best wishes to you both and look forward to your expert input with the 3D printing and research.
    Keith and Tanya.

Bryan Jackson taught me how to framebuild and I would recommend Downland Cycle’s residential training course to anyone interested in building from scratch. It’s total immersion and with my long experience of working in the cycle industry, I quickly recognise genuine knowledge and sound teaching. The fact that Bryan operates a highly respected Campag Service Centre on site speaks volumes. His technical skills are hard earned and you only get this good if you’ve lived and breathed it day in day out.If something isn’t going to work, Bryan will tell you straight, but he’ll also tell you why and then make sure you get it right. If the metal is too cold he’ll tell you, if it’s getting too hot he’ll tell you….torch too far away…torch too close. Clear instructions are essential as your brain is learning an art as well as a science. There’s plenty of time to practice and Bryan also makes sure you take a break as that’s all part of the assimilation process (apple donut? Don’t mind if I do…)And what a place to be! Amazing rolling downs – hence the name I presume – take your bike (as if you wouldn’t). I cycled every morning before the course and felt like I hit the ground running. Hot showers, fully equipped bunkhouse, WiFi and delicious evening meals served up by both Bryan (yes, he cooks as well but that’s another story) and Julie Jackson. Give Julie a ring if you’re interested or email her – she’s also served her time in the cycle industry – not just anyone rides a multicoloured Brompton with a Brooks saddle. So to sum up I will simply say – high standards, generosity and for me… a life changing experience! Thank you Bryan and Julie. Liz – Beaumont Bicycle
